French Catholic Fundies took a hammer to Andres Serrano’s ‘Piss Christ’ on Sunday in Avignon. What’s ‘Piss Christ’? Oh, just a photo of Jesus on the cross, bathing in a glass of the artist’s piss. The piece has been touring since 1987. What’s the big deal, right? lol…
When New York artist Andres Serrano created ‘Piss Christ’, he described it as a statement on the misuse of religion. Serrano has since defended his photograph as a criticism of the "billion-dollar Christ-for-profit industry" and a "condemnation of those who abuse the teachings of Christ for their own ignoble ends".
According to The Guardian, “…on Palm Sunday morning, four people in sunglasses aged between 18 and 25 entered the exhibition just after it opened at 11am. One took a hammer out of his sock and threatened the guards with it. A guard grabbed another man around the waist but within seconds the group managed to take a hammer to the plexiglass screen and slash the photograph with another sharp object, thought to be a screwdriver or ice-pick. They also smashed another work, which showed the hands of a meditating nun.”
The gallery will reopen to display the destroyed works. I hope the unintended consequence of national media coverage and increased gallery attendance doesn’t get the poor fundies panties in a bunch. I personally don’t believe Catholic Fundies have “destroyed” the piece, but on the contrary, have added artistic value to it. In addition to Serrano’s original statement we now add religion’s intolerance to freedom of expression.
