Historically, holidays have been known to inspire the ire of Religious Fundamentalists. After all, many of the Puritans that fled to the Americas banned celebrations, such as Christmas and Easter, for failing to be godly enough. One might say that fear of fairly innocuous celebrations is as American as Jesus Bobble heads.
So, it should come as no surprise that Halloween has become the latest recipient of such treatment. One Christian group has decided to protest the ungodly Fall Celebrations with their own Holiday, which they have cleverly christened “JesusWeen.” Below is an explanation of this Halloween alternative from the official JesusWeen site.
JesusWeen is a non profit organization also known as JesusWin. We are focused on helping people live better lives through the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. JesusWeen is a God-given vision which was born as an answer to the cry of many every October 31st.
The dictionary meaning of Ween is to expect, believe or think. We therefore see October 31st as a day to expect a gift of salvation and re-think receiving Jesus. Every year, the world and its system have a day set aside (October 31st) to celebrate ungodly images and evil characters while Christians all over the world participate, hide or just stay quiet on Halloween day.
In short, this group has come to realize that Halloween is a perfect time to proselytize. In place of candy, JesusWeen enthusiasts plan to pass out “bibles and other Christian gifts.” In place of costumes, they are encouraged to wear white to “symbolize righteousness.”
The JesusWeen phenomenon has certainly received a lot of media attention, particularly from The Onion, and the Jimmy Kimmel Show. The Jimmy Kimmel Show features a skit, below, where JesusWeen participants refer to themselves as Jesusweiners.
