As of late, the Religious Right seems to have entered into a tireless campaign to strip women in the U.S. of their hard earned reproductive rights. Rebecca Watson of Skepchick fame informs us that efforts against contraception and abortion and the promotion of ineffective and detrimental Abstinence Only education programs have been the strategies of choice for Conservatives.
Recently, Conservatives in the state of Kansas have been working to make sure the state's three surviving Abortion Clinics will be shut down as July rolls in.
Once again the people at The Young Turks have something to say about this turn of events. In their latest segment, Hosts Ben Mankiewicz and Ana Kasparian reveal the dubious methods that the Religious Right made use of to undermine Roe v. Wade.
New requirements have been issued out, and Abortion Clinics are expected to meet them if they want to stay open. However, the requirements are so strict and specific, that the Clinics, in all likelihood, will not be able to meet the deadline. Below is an example of some of these new regulations.
An abortion facility in Kansas must be set to a temperature between 68 and 73 degrees, have a janitor's closet of at least 50 square feet and an operating room of 150 square feet, feature separate dressing rooms for staff and patients and have 13 different types of drugs on hand. A patient is now required to stay in the recovery room, which must have a temperature between 70 and 75 degrees, for at least two hours after her procedure, even if the procedure requires no anesthesia.
Many find these new reuglations " burdensome and clearly designed to prohibit abortion in Kansas, since hospitals and surgical centers aren't even required to meet temperature and closet-size requirements." Kasparian concludes with a rather unsettling sentiment: "This is unconstitutional, this is against the law, and I don't know how they are getting away with this."
UPDATE from motherjones.com: "A judge in Kansas has blocked the state's strict new regulations on abortion providers from taking effect, a move that will allow all three clinics in the state to continue offering services, the Kansas City Star reports."
