A Crazy Person: Sonny Bono isn't dead! He's working with aliens to control my brain through implants in my teeth! Also, my neighbor's parrot is the Anti-Christ! I accept all of this on faith, which is more virtuous than actual evidence.
A Moral Pillar of Society: Jesus of Nazareth isn't dead! He's going to come back to earth at any time, as a superhero, so he and his invisible omniscient father who created the universe can cast everyone I don't like into eternal torture! I accept all of this on faith, which is more virtuous then actual evidence.

I don't think it's so much about a relationship with Jesus, as it is a relationship with one's self. Methinks, many of us have just been socially conditioned to accept instances of self reflection and epiphany as other worldly guidance.
If you visit this website often there was a recent post that featured research from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
For the purposes of their studies, scientist asked subjects, mainly Christians, moral questions while their brains were being scanned. The results showed that "thinking about divine views activated the same brain regions as thinking about their own views." Leading the researchers to believe that "Intuiting God’s beliefs on important issues may not produce an independent guide, but may instead serve as an echo chamber that reverberates one’s own beliefs."

That said, I don't think it's so much active self delusion, as ingrained cultural assumptions. I really don't think people have relationships with Jesus, at least in the sense that they feel they do.
There is no evidence for even the existance of the biblical jesus let alone any miracles or him being the son of a "god". None. Even the writings of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John can't cooberate his existance because they contradict ecah other on numerous points let alone the FACT that none of them actually met jesus. At best, they wrote about jesus after hearing 3rd hand stories.
BTW, caps-lock does nothing to make you sound right or intelligent.
THAT IS NOT HOW IT WORKS. GOD LOVES EVERYONE. IT'S NOT ABOUT RELIGION EITHER. SCREW THAT. IT'S REALLY ABOUT A REAL RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS. I KNOW IT SOUNDS ALL WIERD. DON'T GET HUNG UP WITH RELIGION AND DO NOT JUDGE GOD BASED ON WHAT CHURCHES DO OR SAY ALL THE TIME, NOT THAT THERES NOT GOOD CHURCHES OUT THERE.
